Cheryl Smith

Intro/Background

Cheryl Smith is the editor-publisher at I Messenger Media, LLC, the umbrella multi-media organization that publishes Texas Metro News, Garland Journal and I Messenger.

Education

1980 Undergraduate: Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, FL, 1986: Masters: Amberton University, Dallas, TX. I have also participated in journalism fellowships at NC A&T State University,National Press Foundation and Western Kentucky University. Also served as director of DFW/ABJ’s Urban Journalism Workshop for over 15 years.

Experience

Since 2012, Cheryl Smith has been the editor-publisher of I Messenger Media LLC, the multimedia organization that includes Texas Metro News, Garland Journal and I Messenger; as well as digital and broadcasts components. Prior experience includes editorial stints at several publications, including the Capital Outlook, Dallas Weekly, Dallas Examiner. She has also contributed to the Dallas Times Herald, Our Texas Magazine, Minority Opportunity News, Ebony Tribune, and others. For 22 years she was an executive producer/host of the award-winning Reporters Roundtable on KKDA-AM and headed the Communications Department at Paul Quinn College.

Related Experience

Smith won numerous awards, including Messenger Award from National Newspaper Publishers Association, multiple awards from the Texas Publishers Association, Dallas Press Club and NAACP. The National Civil Rights Museum awarded her the “Invisible Giant” Award at 40th commemoration of Bloody Sunday, and in 2005, OMO Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, presented her with the “Image Award.” In 2009, Smith was honored by Journalism Educator’s Association, named Outstanding Alumni from Council of Black Alumni Associations and Woman of the Year for Women Empowering Women, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority and BP&W Club. She has also received several journalism fellowships.

Statement

I have served as NABJ secretary since January 2016. During that time, in addition to fulfilling my duties as secretary, I have been an active board member addressing issues, serving and working in the best interest of the organization locally, regionally and nationally.
