The Elections Committee is pleased to announce the list of certified candidates for the 2019-2021 Board of Directors:

CANDIDATE FOR REGION I DIRECTOR

Tory Parrish
Business Reporter
Newsday
New York, New York

Intro/Background

Tory N. Parrish is a business reporter at Newsday in Long Island, N.Y.  She is also a deputy director for the National Association of Black Journalists’ Region I and a former president of an award-winning NABJ chapter.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in communication, with a concentration in print journalism, from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Experience

Parrish has more than 15 years of professional journalism experience.  She started her career in newspapers as an education reporter at the Manassas Journal Messenger/Potomac News in Northern Virginia.  She then worked as a business reporter and copy editor for the Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y., for five years.

Parrish spent seven years as a reporter at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, where she covered energy, town government, and commerce and development.

Related Experience

Parrish served two consecutive two-year terms as president of the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation. Under her leadership, PBMF was named NABJ professional chapter of the year in 2015 (tie) and 2017.

Parrish helped boost the federation’s membership tenfold by introducing new initiatives, including a professional development series and a monthly newsletter written by the president.

PBMF also established a Community Service Subcommittee, organized more social events, partnered with nonprofits and professional organizations on programs, and improved its financial controls.

The chapter also met with local media managers to address issues of biased coverage involving subjects of color.

Statement

I am seeking the position of NABJ Region I director because I believe my experience in chapter leadership, volunteerism and goal setting would be an asset to local chapters.

I am a proponent of strong teambuilding to accomplish a goal, but I also understand the importance of the tenacity of a small group of volunteers working diligently to take a project from inception to completion.

I experienced both in leading an NABJ chapter that transitioned through an extremely challenging period to a strong position with solid financial, programming and leadership structures in place.
