Certified Candidate

The Elections Committee is pleased to announce the list of certified candidates for the 2019-2021 Board of Directors:

Christopher Nelson

New York, New York

Christopher E. Nelson is a Coordinating Producer for MSNBC & NBC News. Currently he oversees planning and logistics for MSNBC’s weekend programming. He is a former NABJ Student Representative, Student Education Enrichment and Development Committee Co-Chair, and Communications Committee Chair.

Nelson attained a bachelor’s degree in communications with a specialization in journalism from Loyola University Maryland. He also holds a master’s of studies in law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. In 2017 he participated in both the ASNE Emerging Leaders Institute and the Poynter-NABJ Digital Leadership Academy.

Since June 2017 Nelson has been a Coordinating Producer for MSNBC. He has assisted in the planning and execution of coverage of the Women’s Marches in 2018 and 2019, the March for Our Lives, Hurricanes Irma and Maria and their aftermaths, and most recently the 2018 Midterm Elections. Prior to his role at MSNBC he was a Senior Editor on the NBC News National Desk where he managed the network’s national desk overnight, overseeing the editorial newsgathering process and logistics for NBC News’ different entities, comprising all of North and South Americas.

Related Experience

Nelson has been a member of NABJ for nearly 15 years. In that time he served two years on the national board of directors under President Barbara Ciara, and later served two two-year terms as a committee chair under Presidents Kathy Times and Gregory Lee. In addition he co-chaired NABJ’s first-ever Media Institute on Legal Affairs, and served on the planning committee for two NABJ Region I Conferences. Nelson has been a member of the Baltimore Association of Black Journalists, the New York Association of Black Journalists, and the Washington Association of Black Journalists all in Region I.

As the Region I Director for the National Association of Black Journalists I would be steadfastly committed to the principles of accessibility, advocacy, and accountability. I believe that NABJ must make a stronger commitment to engaging members on the local level and fostering connections with the communities where our members live and work. I believe that we must be steadfast protectors of freedom of the press and of diversity in newsrooms. And, I believe that we must do a better job finding partnerships, alliances and opportunities which allow the organization to have continued relevance and impact.
