The Elections Committee is pleased to announce the list of certified candidates for the 2017-2019 Board of Directors:

Johann Calhoun
News and Special Projects Editor
The Philadelphia Tribune
Philadelphia, PA

Johann Calhoun is currently the Region I Director for the National Association of Black Journalists and News and Special Projects Editor for The Philadelphia Tribune.

2001 bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA.; 2007 graduate certificate in communications from the University of Pennsylvania; 2008 adjunct instructor for Temple University’s School of Communication and Media.

Johann is the news and special projects editor for The Philadelphia Tribune; news correspondent for Stanford University Magazine; news correspondent for Johnson Publishing Company; and teaches Journalism Research [Computer Assisted Reporting] as an adjunct instructor at Temple University.

Related Experience
Johann Calhoun has led successful back-to-back NABJ Region I conferences in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Prior he led the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists to win the 2014 NABJ Professional Chapter of the Year. Before that he served as vice president-print and former chairman of the chapter’s Media Watch Committee. During this time, he served as chairman of the 2010’s Convention Kickoff Planning Committee. He served as co-chairman of the planning committee for the 2011 NABJ Opening Reception for the 2011 convention and worked extensively and reported directly to NABJ’s executive director and convention chairman.

Having boosted the region’s brand online, increased the number of NABJ members, and directed two successful regional conferences, it would be an honor to continue my position for two more years as NABJ Region I Director. I also served as president of the Philadelphia chapter, 2014 NABJ Professional Chapter of the Year. It’s essential that chapters within our region remain alive and thriving. In order to achieve this we will remain robust in our activities and presence. I sincerely ask you to re-elect me as your director and continue helping NABJ grow.
