The Dr. Sheila Brooks NABJ Entrepreneur Scholarship is open to graduate school students who are aspiring entrepreneurs. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited college or university and be interested in pursuing a media and communications career. The successful recipient of this scholarship must demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, leadership ability and an entrepreneurial mindset.

This scholarship was created to honor Dr. Brooks’s lifetime of service with NABJ. Among her many contributions, she was the first national scholarship and internship programs co-chair, a national executive board member, founder of the NABJ student projects, and currently serves on the strategic planning committee.

Through this scholarship, the NABJ is committed to building on the legacy of the organization’s founding principles, to increase media ownership by African Americans.

Specific Application Requirements:

  • Must be an current NABJ member
  • Must major in journalism or a communications-related discipline
  • GPA. requirement: 2.5 or higher
  • Essay Topic: "In 1,000 to 2,000 words, write a mini business plan. Tell us about your business, why you chose it, and where the idea or concept came from. Why are you uniquely qualified to start and run this business? What will make your business stand out from the rest? Who are the potential customers and how and when will you make money? How will you use this business to help advance African Americans in media?

General Application Requirements:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter 
  • Official college transcript
  • Five (5) work amples (i.e. graduate-level submitted entrepreneurial work and/or published media and communications work for traditional and new media platforms)

  •  Three (3) references

Dr. Brooks is a first-time author, Emmy-award winning journalist, entrepreneur, dedicated advocate for minority, women and diversity issues and small businesses, and an expert in multicultural marketing and entrepreneurial education. She is founder, president and CEO of SRB Communications, an award-winning, full-service boutique advertising and marketing agency specializing in multicultural markets. SRB Communications has been in business for 28 years in its Washington, D.C. headquarters.
