The Dr. Sheila Brooks NABJ Entrepreneur Scholarship is open to graduate school students who are aspiring entrepreneurs. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited college or university and be interested in pursuing a media and communications career. The successful recipient of this scholarship must demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, leadership ability, and an entrepreneurial mindset.

This scholarship was created to honor Dr. Brooks’s lifetime of service with NABJ. Among her many contributions, she was the first national scholarship and internship programs co-chair, a national executive board member, founder of the NABJ student projects, and currently serves on the strategic planning committee.

Through this scholarship the NABJ is committed to building on the legacy of the organization’s founding principles, to increase media ownership by African Americans.

Specific Application Requirements:

  • Must be an current NABJ member
  • Must major in journalism or a communications-related discipline
  • G.P.A. requirement: 2.5 or higher
  • Essay topic: "As a future entrepreneur, what would your business be? Give three examples of how your business will help advance African Americans in media." (1,000 - 2,000 words)

Dr. Brooks is founder, president and CEO of SRB Communications, an award-winning, full-service boutique advertising and marketing agency specializing in multicultural markets. SRB Communications has been in business for 28 years in its Washington, D.C. headquarters.
