2019 NABJ-The Ringer Internship

NABJ and the Ringer are offering two (2) full-time summer internships in Los Angeles and New York. Interns will work in either the audio, editorial, social media or video departments. This is a paid internship and has a full-time requirement of 40 hours per week. While the time frame of the internship is negotiable, applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 12 weeks. Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. college or university or be no more than one term past their graduation date; in good academic standing if still in school; and in possession of unrestricted work authorization.

Candidates will be submitted to the Ringer by the NABJ Sports Task Force. 

Number of Internships Available: 2
Student Classification: Undergraduate or Graduate

Internship Type: Paid | 12 weeks | 40 hours per week

Eligibility:

• Must be an NABJ member.
• Must major in journalism/communications with an interest in pursuing a career in sports journalism.
• Must be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time in the semester prior to the internship.
• Must be graduating in May 2019, December 2019 or May 2020.

• Three (3) work samples (can include a combination of writing, audio, articles, video clips, photos, or personal website and on-camera work. Audio and on-camera samples should be no more than five minutes in length each.)


Audio Internship 

Overview
The Ringer is seeking full-time summer interns to assist its podcast department in Los Angeles. Interns will provide support to the podcast producers and talent covering topics that drive the Ringer universe: sports, popular culture, technology, politics, food, and more. Interns will have the opportunity to produce pieces.

Location Available: Los Angeles, California

Responsibilities:
● Assist with fact checking, research, data analysis, interview transcribing, pre- and post-production, and other CMS work
● Collaborate with the podcast department to pitch and produce relevant pieces
● Provide general studio and office support as needed

Requirements:
● Experience at a student podcast, radio station, television network, newspaper or magazine
● Must be able to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure, including working evenings and weekends
● Must demonstrate an understanding of creating content on the latest social media platforms
● Must have at least one prior professional internship
● Must have prior experience as an audio producer
● Must show a fundamental ability to make sound editorial judgments and balance conflicting priorities
● Working knowledge of Slack, Trello, and Pro Tools


Editorial Internship

Overview 
The Ringer is seeking full-time summer interns to assist with its editorial departments in Los Angeles and New York. Interns will chiefly be responsible for supporting the copy desk and assisting the editors and writers covering topics that drive the Ringer universe: sports, pop culture, technology, politics, food and more. Interns will have the opportunity to write in any of our core areas of interest.

Locations Available: 
New York, New York | Los Angeles, California

Responsibilities:
● Assist with fact checking, research, interview transcribing, story production, and other CMS work as necessary
● Collaborate with the editorial department to write relevant pieces
● Provide general office support as needed

Requirements:
● Experience as both a writer and editor
● Experience at a student newspaper, magazine or podcast network
● Must be able to fact check in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment 
● Must be able to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure, including working evenings and weekends
● Must have at least one prior professional internship
● Must have high-level communication, critical-reading, and writing skills
● Must show a fundamental ability to make sound editorial judgments and balance conflicting priorities
● Should be comfortable navigating social media platforms
● Should be conversant in or passionate about the topics that are relevant to The Ringer’s universe


Social Internship 

Overview

The Ringer is seeking full-time summer interns to assist its social media department in Los Angeles. Interns will provide support to the social media staff, editors and writers, and the a/v departments covering topics that drive the Ringer universe: sports, popular culture, technology, politics, food, and more. Interns must be familiar with the existing social video landscape and be prepared to ideate around how The Ringer differentiates itself from the pack.

Location Available
Los Angeles, California

Responsibilities:
● Act as edit support for our full range of video projects, from pre-production to posting across our various platforms
● Aid in the planning of content scheduling and production development 
● Handle direct-to-social content distribution for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube
● Most importantly, make smart, creative, shareable work you’re proud of
● Operate studio or field production equipment as necessary
● Supply pre-production and research for social video content
● Work closely with video and social producers in support of all production

Requirements:
● Ability to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure, which may involve working evenings and weekends
● Capacity to work and react quickly in a digital news environment 
● Collaborative personality with strong communication skills
● Deep understanding of news and story lines, with sound journalistic ethics and judgment
● Expertise with Adobe Creative programs, specifically Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop 
● Proficiency in creating social-first videos, explainers, and real-time reactive video 
● Strong writing skills, including a capacity for SEO-friendly headlines and descriptions
 

Video Internship 

Overview
The Ringer is seeking full-time summer interns to assist the video department in Los Angeles. Interns will chiefly be responsible for supporting the video producers, editors, and talent covering topics that drive the Ringer universe: sports, popular culture, technology, politics, food, and more. Interns will have the opportunity to pitch and produce pieces.

Location Available: Los Angeles, California 

Responsibilities:
● Assist with fact checking, research assistance, data logging, interview transcribing, video production, and other project-management tasks
● Collaborate with the video department to pitch and produce pieces
● Provide general studio and office support as needed
● Work closely with video producers, editors and talent in video endeavors

Requirements:
● A fundamental ability to make sound editorial judgments and balance conflicting priorities
● Ability to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure, including working evenings and weekends
● Experience at a student television or podcast network or digital newspaper or magazine
● Have a basic understanding of social media
● Must have at least one prior professional internship
● Must have prior experience in editing and production skills, as well as basic shooting skills
● Working knowledge of Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop
