 Description

Businessman, legendary sports icon and philanthropist Isiah Thomas has partnered with NABJ to establish the Isiah Thomas Sports & Entertainment Scholarship to encourage increased diversity, inclusion and equity in the media industry.

 

 Specific Application Requirements for Students:

  • Must be currently enrolled full-time at Florida Memorial University

  • Must have an interest in pursuing a career in the sports journalism, entertainment or communications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • Must major in journalism, media or a communications-related discipline with the interest of pursuing a career in journalism or media
  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student with at least one year remaining at the time of the application submission
  • Must meet GPA requirement: 3.0 (or higher) verified on an official transcript.
  • Essay topic: "What are three reasons you would like to pursue a career in sports journalism or entertainment, and what do you hope to be your legacy as a journalist?" (800-1,000 words)

General Application Requirements:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter (one-page) 
  • Official college transcript
  • Three (3) work samples ( can include a combination of writing, audio, articles, video clips, photos, or a personal website and on-camera work). Audio and on-camera samples should be no more than five minutes in length each.
  • Three (3) references (Include the individual’s name, title, phone number and email address. Letters are NOT required.)

  • Documents must be in Microsoft Word or PDF. Please save and submit all documents as "Name.Year.TypeofFile" (example: JaneDoe.2013.Resume). 

*The awardee will receive a scholarship of $5,000 and registration to the 2019 NABJ Convention & Career Fair in Miami. He or She will be acknowledged during the Sports Task Force events and required to write a post-convention account of the experience.*

NABJ’s Sports Task Force promotes diversity in America’s sports departments and provides programming toward developing future sports journalists.

About Isiah Thomas: Businessman, Legendary Sports Icon, Philanthropist

Born and raised on Chicago’s West Side, Isiah Lord Thomas III’s professional career spans more than three decades in business and sports. Thomas has garnered worldwide attention for his contributions in all levels of professional basketball, including induction into the NBA Hall of Fame, and for his distinctive business initiatives and philanthropic endeavors. 

As a player, Thomas built a reputation as a tireless worker and formidable competitor. As a businessman, Thomas’ leadership and sharp business sense continue to serve him well in his post-playing days.

Thomas’ philanthropic work was inspired by his mother’s work to improve the lives of disadvantaged women and families in Chicago, Thomas founded Mary’s Court in her honor to support the health, safety, academic and personal achievement of Chicago’s youth and youth around the country. Thomas has gained national recognition for his role in Chicago’s Peace Tournaments and his advocacy to prevent youth violence. He has awarded more than 100 scholarships to criminal justice students through the Isiah Thomas Scholarship at Indiana University, his alma mater.

As chairman and CEO of Isiah International LLC, an investment holdings company, Thomas is also the owner of five companies: Isiah Real Estate, a development firm specializing in commercial properties; TAND Properties, a property management firm, private equity and asset management firm; Isiah Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations; and GRE3N Waste Removal. Thomas also co-owns the waste removal's sister company, RE3 Recycling, with his daughter, Lauren.

Isiah Thomas is the official owner/Importer of Cheurlin Champagne. Cheurlin Champagne, is an award-winning champagne from the Celles-Sur-Ource region of France. Since being introduced in the United States, Cheurlin Champagne has won numerous awards. Thomas wants to make Cheurlin the “go to” champagne for generations to come in the U.S. and all over the world.

By focusing on the company’s core business, Mr. Thomas has nurtured and built the firm, bringing it to new levels of performance and success. He is an active member of the team and a major contributor to its day-to-day activities. His continued guidance and leadership has had, and will continue to have, a dramatic and powerful impact on the company. Current holdings include firms across a wide range of industries; from real estate and waste removal to champagne and sports & entertainment.

Thomas is currently serving as an analyst for NBATV and a regular contributor to NBA.com.

Thomas has two children and he currently lives in New York with his wife of 33 years and college sweetheart, Lynn Kendall.
