2019 NABJ Presidents Scholarship: Chuck Stone

This year, the NABJ Presidents Scholarship is given out in NABJ Founder Chuck Stone's name to honor his contributions to the association. As NABJ’s first president, Chuck Stone once said, “Journalism chose me.” His career included work at New York Age, serving as editor of The Afro American and The Chicago Defender, and work as a columnist for Philadelphia Daily News.



Essay topic (800-1000 words): “What is the importance of Chuck Stone’s impact as the first president of NABJ and the role he played as the first to lead our esteemed organization? Name three things you would do if you were president of NABJ and why? 


Applicants must:

  • Be a current NABJ member;
  • Be a student who is currently enrolled full-time at an accredited college/university in the U.S.;
  • Major in journalism with a concentration in print, and career aspirations of being a print journalist;
  • Meet the cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher requirement verified on an official transcript;
  • Have at least one year of school remaining at the time of the application submission;
  • Submit a resume and a one-page cover letter;
  • Submit five writing and/or work samples (e.g., articles, video clips, photos, or personal website); and,
  • Provide three references.
