NABJ Unveils New Strategic Plan for 2017-2020


WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 4, 2017) - The National Association of Black Journalists  (NABJ) Board of Directors released the NABJ Strategic Plan 2017-2020 on the organization's website today.

"I am grateful for the experts and committee members who unselfishly invested their time to make the NABJ Strategic Plan 2017-2020 exemplary. Their passion and devotion have paved a surer future and clear direction for our organization," said NABJ President Sarah Glover. "As we move to the next phase of work and adoption of the recommendations, NABJ will grow its footprint as a sound nonprofit association, digital journalism leader and strong advocate for media diversity and press freedom."

NABJ founders, former presidents, key stakeholders, chapter presidents, members and partners contributed to the robust yearlong process funded by a $100,000 grant from the Ford Foundation. This considerable investment enabled NABJ to chart a pathway to build upon its recent fiscal success, a projected $1 million-plus surplus for 2016.
"The ability to produce news that is relevant to all of our nation's communities necessitates newsrooms that are as diverse as our country," said Barbara Raab, program officer in the Ford Foundation's Creativity & Free Expression program. "It is very encouraging that the NABJ will emerge as a stronger, more resilient organization at precisely the moment when establishing accountability and trust in our journalistic institutions is absolutely critical for our democracy."
NABJ has an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million and  a membership base of 3,500. By expanding its resources and diversifying its activities, NABJ will remain relevant, focused and flexible, while implementing the three-year strategic plan.
"We are pleased with the direction and pace of NABJ's growth and development," said NABJ Executive Consultant Drew Berry. "Steps we are taking today will ensure NABJ's viability and sustainability, as well as its relevance in an ever-changing industry for years to come."

The strategic plan details five priorities:
1. Financial and Organizational Stability
 Key tasks involve aligning resources with key activities, diversifying revenue streams and safeguarding cash reserves, and developing metrics to monitor progress.
2. NABJ Jobs
NABJ will develop robust affirmative action programs to secure more hiring and promotions for its members, develop job databases for members and prospective employers, and cultivate business startup and ownership skills for members.
3. Training and Professional Development
NABJ will work as a leader in digital media training by improving its Media Institute, regional training programs and partnerships.
4. Advocacy Activities
NABJ will elevate its efforts to advocate for black journalists and for coverage of issues relevant to the black community in the U.S. and internationally.
5. Special Projects: Convention Site Selection
NABJ will revise its convention site-selection process to ensure strong attendance and the generation of optimal revenue.

President Glover has created an NABJ Strategic Plan Implementation Committee, led by NABJ Founder William Dilday, to assist the organization. The committee's charge is to present working recommendations to the NABJ board and staff and to provide quarterly assessments of the association's progress.
