WASHINGTON (March 28, 2013) --The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) congratulates Michaela Pereira on the announcement that she will join CNN’s new morning show as its News Anchor based out of New York.

"We are proud of and commend Michaela for her hard work and professionalism, which led to this exciting position,” NABJ President Gregory Lee, Jr. said. "At the same time, we applaud CNN’s leadership for recognizing that having diverse talent on air is necessary to serve the nation’s evolving television audiences and in providing nuanced, balanced news coverage.”

Pereira departs for CNN after nine years as the co-anchor of the Tribune-owned KTLA-5 Morning News in Los Angeles.
"I am honored and thrilled to be joining such a prestigious news organization as CNN and am very much looking forward to joining the new morning show team with Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan. This is an exciting time for me in my career and I look forward to joining my new family in New York. The nine years I spent as part of the KTLA Morning News and my involvement in the Los Angeles community has been utterly amazing and fulfilling," said Pereira.
The announcement is welcomed by NABJ as a significant advancement for one of our longtime members, as well as a positive development for on-air diversity in cable news, an issue about which NABJ has been concerned for some time.
"We hope this is the first of many opportunities for our members under CNN's new leadership," said NABJ Vice President of Broadcast Bob Butler.

An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization for journalists of color in the nation, and provides career development as well as educational and other support to its members worldwide. For more information, please visit
