NABJ Students Go to China

Scholarship Application Deadline: Oct. 5, 2018 at 5 p.m. EDT

At least three students will be chosen by the National Association of Black Journalists for an incredible all expenses-paid trip to China as part of the NABJ Les Payne Reporting Trip to China for international reporting and training. The students will be part of a delegation of NABJ members traveling from Nov. 24-Dec. 4, 2018. Submission materials must be sent to Vanessa Evans, NABJ Programs at by Friday, Oct. 5, 2018 at 5 p.m. EDT. Please write: NABJ Student China Application in the subject line. China Reporting Mission Scholarship Submission Requirements and Eligibility

·      Student must present an up to two-minute video detailing why they should be chosen for the reporting trip to China and what the student hopes to gain from the opportunity. Please upload the video to a video platform and forward the link. 

·      Student’s two-minute video entry must be accompanied by a written transcript of the video utilizing AP Style Guide. 

·      Resume

·      Personal statement explaining career aspirations.

·      Students must submit a total of two (2) recommendations. One letter must come from a professor or school dean. The other may come from a media professional. The letters of recommendation must be sent directly from the nominator to Vanessa Evans at by the posted application deadline.

·      Student must be currently enrolled in a four-year university or graduate school.

·      Student must be a junior, senior or graduate student pursuing a career in journalism.

·      Student must have current national NABJ student membership by the October 5 submission deadline.

·      Student’s entry must be accompanied by a letter from the school’s dean granting permission for student to be excused for travel Nov. 24 to Dec. 4, and stating that arrangements will be made to fulfill class requirements.

Winning entries will be chosen based upon:

·      Quality of presentation (video, sound and editing)

·      Quality of written submission (AP Style, grammar etc.)

·      Strength of recommendations

·      Compelling argument as to why the student should be chosen

·      Uniqueness of entry  


Students will be required to sign a liability waiver to participate in the trip.
