NABJ welcomes new staff to national office

  Kaylan Somerville is an innovative fundraising executive who has raised and managed nearly $20 million since 2005. For over 10 years, Kaylan has increased revenue for several
multi-million dollar nonprofit organizations including the YMCA; the American Nurses Foundation; the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; and Big Brothers Big Sisters. 

In 2011, Kaylan launched Blue Umbrella Fundraising to help nonprofits of all sizes mitigate risks and maintain fundraising strategy amidst organizational shifts. 

Kaylan is a graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland; and is a sought-after facilitator who most recently served as a trainer for the Foundation Center, Baltimore City Mayor’s Office, and the Family League of Baltimore. She and her husband are the proud parents of four children.  


  James C. Durrah, II is a communications, marketing and public relations management professional with experience in sectors that include nonprofit, corporate, politics, and television. His communications, marketing and media strategies have supported multi-million dollar development campaigns in addition to programming and public affairs-relations campaigns.

James is a graduate of Howard University, and he is currently producing and directing a documentary film entitled “Can I Askew a Question,” stylized as #AskewDoc, which explores trauma associated with child abandonment, foster care and adoption. 
  Jovan Riley is an experienced administration professional who has worked in a number of diverse settings in multiple industries that include nonprofit and corporate. She attended Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA and enjoys writing poetry and short stories in her spare time.
