Hello NABJ,

I want to thank the outgoing board members for their service to NABJ and their commitment to every one of our members. Their hard work and sacrifice has made this organization stronger and has made an impact in newsrooms across this country.

I would also like to commend all of the candidates in this year’s election for their dedication to NABJ and hard-fought campaigns. We all care very deeply about NABJ and I look forward to working with everyone to move NABJ forward.

Most importantly, I would like to thank you, our members, for placing your trust in the new Board of Directors to refresh your spirits, restore your confidence and revitalize our NABJ.

I want to share with you our next steps.

At the business meeting on August 2, 2013, the NABJ membership voted to convene a special commission which will explore re-writing our Constitution and positioning NABJ for its next 40 years. This commission must be formed by Labor Day and is required to report to the membership by January 1, 2014. I plan to have that body in place by the end of next week.

Also I intend to appoint the members of all of our standing committees before the Fall Board meeting in October. If you currently serve on a committee or would like to join one, please click here to register your interest. Let me know which committee interests you and your relevant experience.  While I cannot guarantee every interested member will be selected for the committee of his or her choice, I believe this is the best process to include those who wish to get more involved with NABJ. I hope that everyone interested in serving NABJ will have an opportunity to get involved. I will refer to this database as a resource during this board's term.

Your Board is currently working on plans for Media Institutes and regional conferences to be held in 2014. Please contact your regional director if you have ideas or suggestions for these conferences.

This fall, we are hosting a Media Institute for Media Professionals and Entrepreneurs on September 27, which will be followed by the Region I Conference on September 28. Both events will be held in New York City.

Executive Director Maurice Foster and I spent this week meeting with media companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, including current sponsors and potential sponsors in Silicon Valley. This is in keeping with NABJ’s missions of jobs, advocacy, and increased funding.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held in Boston in October (exact dates to be determined).

We will keep you informed about what your Board is doing to better serve the organization and you, our members. We look forward to providing you with increased transparency and will continue to provide updates on our progress.

Our NABJ is moving forward.

Yours in Service,

Bob Butler
