WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 13, 2013) – The NABJ A&E Task Force is proud to announce that we’ve selected Eric Deggans as our 2013 LEGACY award recipient.

The committee selected Deggans because after working tirelessly as a TV and media critic for years, he’s had an incredible banner year. We often see him representing us on national and international TV outlets, hear him on radio outlets and his book, Race-Baiter, has been well-received nationally.

"Words truly feel inadequate to express the gratitude and honor I feel in receiving this award from my peers, friends, mentors and mentees – the journalists focused on covering arts and entertainment who are also strong members of the National Association of Black Journalists,” Deggans says of the honor. "I’ve spent lots of time with NABJ – as a chapter president, committee chairman and recruiter for our newspaper at many conventions. And we all know the best part of being active with NABJ is helping out your fellow journalists and feeling like you made a difference in covering these issues we care about so deeply. This honor is so amazingly special because it speaks to both those goals. It’s a humbling, encouraging, exhilarating pat on the back from a group of ace professionals whose work and example already inspires me every day. Thank you so much, guys. I’m going to work hard every day to live up to the honor you have presented me.”

The NABJ A&E Task Force first presented their first LEGACY Award in 1997 at Chicago's NABJ convention, and the award is handed out to seasoned A&E journalists who are at the top of their careers, and have really set quite the example for other A&E journalists coming behind them. Deggans now joins the company of a special group – others we’ve awarded in the past, include the late John H. Johnson and EBONY magazine’s former Managing Editor Lynn Norment, USA Today’s longtime, celebrated music critic Steve Jones and OMG Insider’s Kevin Frazier.

"Eric is one of NABJ's outstanding members. His views on media and pop culture are among the best in the nation. We are proud of him and we salute him on this great honor."

We will toasting Deggans at our A&E Task Force Honors reception at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, which happens on Friday, August 2.
