Dear NABJ Members:

It's election time!

The filing deadline for anyone seeking election to the NABJ Board of Directors for the 2015-2017/2015-2018 terms is 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Packets must be sent to the NABJ Office, ATTN: Elections Committee, 1100 Knight Hall, Suite 3100, College Park, MD 20742.

The Elections Committee urges all members to consider seeking an office on the 14-member Board. Voting will take place on July 1-August 7 online and during the 2015 NABJ Convention and Career Fair in Minneapolis.

Due to amendments to the NABJ Constitution, ratified by the membership at our 2014 convention in Boston, there are new membership categories in the organization and new positions on the board of directors. There also is a new structure for the board of directors reflecting fewer regions across the country; the addition of vice president-digital and academic representative positions; and staggered terms. I encourage you to review this information and familiarize yourself with the new board structure and voting guidelines.

Lifetime and Professional members may vote for and seek the offices of president, vice president-print, vice president-boradcast, vice president-digital, secretary, treasurer, parliamentarian and regional director. Emerging Professional, and Alumni members may vote for the above listed offices, but may not seek any office on the board of directors. Media-related, academic, and student members may only vote for and seek the office of their respective representative.

Please find below the official timeline for members seeking office for the 2015-2017/2015-2018 term:
  • April 7, 5 p.m. est. - Any member seeking a position must submit the complete declaration packet to the national office.
  • April 14-28 - Declaration packets received by Tuesday, April 7 will be reviewed by the Elections Committee.
  • May 4 - Certification notices will be sent to ALL applicants via email.
  • May 5 - ALL certified candidates can begin to campaign. (Note: Before any candidate may campaign for office, he or she must be certified as eligible to seek office by the 2015 NABJ Elections Committee.)
  • June 5 - Final slate of candidates for the 2015-2017/2015-2018 term will be announced to the membership.
Proposed amendments to the NABJ Constitution were due in to the national office on Thursday, February 5.  The Constitution mandates that all proposed amendments be submitted at least six months prior to the annual convention and be endorsed by the Constitution and Operating Procedures Committee and the Board. We will let you know ASAP if any amendments will be put before the membership.  Please review the NABJ Constitution to see which members may vote on amendments.

Monday, June 15, is the deadline for current or lapsed members to renew, or for first-time members to join in hopes of voting in this year's election via mail-in balloting before the convention in Minneapolis; via electronic balloting before and during the convention, or on Election Day at the convention.

Eligible members preferring mail-in ballots must request one by Friday, June 5. You may send your request for a mail-in ballot to

All mail-in ballots must be received by the NABJ-contracted election company by Wednesday, July 15, to be included in the official tally.

Eligible members can also cast their ballots electronically via the NABJ Web site from Wednesday, July 1 to Election Day, Friday, August 7. Members attending the convention need not wait in line on Election Day to vote. They can do so from anywhere they can get online. And if a last- minute assignment keeps you away from the convention, you'll still be able to vote online – right up until the polls close at 5 p.m. at the declared voting area in the Minneapolis Convention Center. Final election results will, of course, be announced soon after the polls close.

Additional information will be forthcoming.  In the meantime, we look forward to a robust but fair campaign season in 2015!
