Saturday, November 15, 2014 UC Davis Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center 4501 X Street Sacramento, CA 95817 (Program subject to change) The goal of this free one-day workshop is to give print, broadcast and online journalists the tools they need to more effectively report on health stories affecting underserved communities across California. Journalists and media professionals will leave with resources to inform and empower readers, listeners and viewers on how to take action to improve their lives through better health.

In this panel hosted by the UC Davis Medical Center, we’ll look at the complex, integrated, and overlapping social structures and economic systems that are responsible for good and bad health. Additionally, our experts will explore how our social and physical environment, as well as how the distribution of money, power, and resources, shape our health. | | 10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. | THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT IN CALIFORNIA
The enrollment period begins November 15 – the same day as the conference. Panelists will discuss what lessons were learned from the 2013 ACA rollout and how enrollment rates can be improved, especially in the African American and Latino Communities. | | 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. | PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LUNCHEON: PROTECTING OUR YOUNG MEN
Explores gender disparity in regards to how barriers to opportunity for young men and boys of color are treated in the workforce, criminal justice, education and health systems, and the disparities that result.

Access to clean water is a fundamental issue, community development. In the Central Valley water is scarce and often diverted to agriculture and development rather than low income communities or minorities in the Central Valley. We’ll look at the impacts of how this falls disproportionately on the poor communities and communities of color in the Central Valley. | | 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. | HEALTH IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA SPHERE
The use of social media for health education is becoming an increasingly important customer service tool. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter can be beneficial to both a health education consumer and a health care professional because they provide an immediate opportunity for dialogue. This session will help journalists understanding the role of social media in health education and provide tips for using social media responsibly when covering sensitive health topics. | | 3:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m. | CLOSING REMARKS
