Letter to the FCC On Minority Media Ownership

Dear NABJ members and friends:

Ours is now very much a year-round organization - one focusing on advocacy and support for more than 4,000 members nationwide.

Were fresh off regional conferences held in Louisiana, Florida, Maryland, Tennessee and Nevada. Weve placed 17 more student members as summer interns and sent two young journalists to cover an international event in Brazil; two others will soon head to Morocco. And we continue to speak out on matters where black journalists, diversity and journalism intersect, while keeping you abreast of important industry developments.

But even as we expand and burnish NABJ365, its time to get ready for the 30th Anniversary NABJ Convention and Career Fair, which as you know by now is set for Aug. 3-7 in Atlanta. Which means its time to Renew & Register! The fast-approaching pre-registration deadline is Friday, July 1. Dont mess around. Meet the deadline and youll save up to $350 off of on-site registration. If you're not yet a member or your membership is about to lapse, join or renew by July 1 and save!

And make sure you have your hotel room. The convention headquarter hotel, Hyatt Regency Atlanta, is already sold out and the satellite space, Westin Peachtree Hotel, two blocks away, will be maxed out soon. If you havent heard, Bishop T.D. Jakes is bringing 100,000 gospel fans to Atlanta that same week for MegaFest 2005. Our hosts from the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists say after our hotels are filled, the next closest ones available could be an hour away. So, please, if you havent yet secured a place to stay for our convention, hurry and do so today!

'Telling Our Story' Together

Our convention theme is Telling Our Story - and that's exactly what we aim to do while in Atlanta. Well proudly honor our beloved 44 founders and illustrious 14 past presidents and marvel at three glorious decades of achievements by NABJ and black journalists. Heres just a taste of what the Programs, 30th Anniversary and S.E.E.D. committees have planned:

  • On Wed., Aug. 3, we hope to kick off the convention by presenting our founders on stage so we can all stand and applaud them for having the vision and courage to create NABJ on Dec. 12, 1975, in Washington. Many founders are expected to attend and special tributes are planned.
  • We hope to give each convention delegate a copy of the second-edition Committed to the Cause: A Salute to NABJ's Presidents. First released to much acclaim as part of our 25th anniversary celebration in 2000, the new commemorative book will once again update our legacy.
  • We hope to unveil our 30 Most Influential Moments, a momentous effort to pinpoint the many highlights and lowlights involving black journalists and the industry during the past three decades.
  • On Sat., Aug. 6, we will hold a special reception for all of our NABJ Babies. More than 500 young men and women have had NABJ internships, scholarships or worked on a student project at least one summer and we want to bring them all together for a reunion.

Our industry has undergone major changes since 1975. Black journalists have come a long way since then, but were also feeling the full force of layoffs, buyouts and downsizing. So as we continue to do stellar journalism, its important to meet each year to organize and strategize about how to keep the industry honest about diversity.

Last year, NABJ helped lead the way in Washington with more than 3,500 attendees among the 8,100 total at UNITY 2004 - the largest gathering of journalists in U.S. history. NABJ will shine no less in Atlanta in 2005.

    Resources, Tools and Contacts

Besides our anniversary focus, the committees, our national office and Board of Directors, AABJ, and others are working to put on a convention aimed at giving seasoned veterans and up-and-comers alike greater means to enter newsrooms prepared to succeed and advance.

The first batch of convention workshops is now ready for your review. They are sure to provide resources, tools and contacts in nine program tracks: Broadcast, Career Development, Hot Topics, Management, New Media, Ownership, Print, Special Interest and Young Journalists.

Our usual array of special events is also shaping up. I'm particularly excited about the 10th annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament and the second annual NABJ Idol competitions, and the Hall of Fame Banquet.

Of course, look for national newsmakers who will keep us on live TV and the front pages while in Atlanta. Look for a magnificent career fair and exhibition area where hundreds of recruiters and job seekers can start lasting relationships, and exhibitors and vendors will show off their products. And, as 2005 is an NABJ election year, look for the voting area on Friday, Aug. 5, and help choose a new and leaner Board of Directors.

Naturally, our latest collection of NABJ Babies will be showing their mettle while covering the convention. Besides that, as always, seasoned professionals will be on hand to critique resumes, clips and tapes. And there will be another Chapter Day, on Wed., Aug. 3, for grassroots leaders.

    Every Registration is Critical

But, again, I believe the highlights of this years convention will evolve around our anniversary. It truly should be a very special time for NABJ, black journalists and the industry. You wont want to miss it.

Just as important, we need each one of you to Renew & Register. Dont forget, your convention registration is critical to NABJ's viability. While embracing NABJ365, the Board of Directors and staff have worked hard to lessen our reliance on annual convention revenue. But theres no mistaking how crucial that revenue still is. If our members don't renew and register, it makes it harder to provide our programs and services.

So don't delay. Members, one more time, Renew & Register for the convention by July 1. Recruiters, sponsors and exhibitors, we welcome and greatly appreciate your participation and support. Lets all gather in Atlanta as one to celebrate our first 30 years of progress and focus on the next 30 years of promise. Lets all tell our story together.

    Grace and peace,

    Herbert Lowe
    NABJ President
