NABJ working to help Haiti earthquake victims

Dear NABJ member:
We have all watched the crisis in Haiti with heartbreak, pain and sometimes awe. With 200,000 people feared dead and more than one million displaced, last month's devastating earthquake is one of the worst natural disasters to affect the Western Hemisphere. NABJ is working to respond to this tragedy by reaching out to members who are familiar with the landscape, and asking them to help us coordinate an action plan.
NABJ World Affairs Task Force co-chairs, John Yearwood and Djibril Diallo have graciously agreed to help guide us. John is the Miami Herald's World Editor and has just returned stateside after spending 10 days coordinating the newspaper's coverage from Port-au-Prince. You'll recall after Hurricane Katrina, John was instrumental in setting up the NABJ fellowships that allowed members to do independent reporting from New Orleans.
Djibril is the Special Adviser to the Executive Director of UNAIDS, and has worked on disasters around the world through his assignments with various United Nations agencies.
Millions have been raised on behalf of Haiti, but there is still a great need to send more help. I believe NABJ is well-positioned to help fill a void, specifically helping Haitian journalists.
John and Djibril will be part of a team assessing the situation and will report back to me.
