Biography: Gregory H. Lee Jr.
Gregory H. Lee Jr. is the 19th President of the National Association of Black Journalists and the senior assistant sports editor of the Boston Globe. He came to the Globe in 2004 as the section’s Sunday editor, leading the paper to three Associated Press Sports Editors Top Ten Sunday Section awards. He later became the second ranking editor of the section in 2008, with duties of managing reporters and leading the section’s daily coverage.
In 2008, Lee led the section’s coverage of the Boston Celtics championship run and its first NBA title in 20 years and served the Globe as its lead on-site editor at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
Lee has also led the section’s diversity efforts in securing talented members to join its ranks. The Globe’s sports section boasts one of the most diverse sections in the nation, earning Lee a reputation in helping the paper secure talented journalists of color.
Lee also served on the company’s first Diversity Council.
Before heading to the Globe, Lee was an editor at the Washington Post, where he held a number of positions during his five-year tenure. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland for three years and president of Xavier’s Washington D.C. alumni chapter.
Prior to working at The Post, Lee worked at The Times-Picayune in New Orleans as a copy editor, later advancing to slot editor, where he was responsible for designing the sports section and running the sports desk. Throughout his college years, Lee had worked as an editorial assistant in the sports department for The Times-Picayune.
Lee is a 1996 graduate of Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana. Lee successfully juggled his work with The Herald, classes at Xavier and his job as an editorial assistant. In addition, he was an intern at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tenn., as part of the Sports Journalism Institute, and an intern at Florida Today in Melbourne, Fla., as part of the Chips Quinn Program. Following graduation from Xavier, Lee received a fellowship in graphics and design at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg. Fla.
