NABJ Development Director Job Description

Background:

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is the largest membership organization of journalists of color in the nation. Since its founding over 40 years ago, NABJ strengthens the field of journalism through our programming, partnerships, career and professional development, and advocacy efforts.


Our membership includes entry-level to mid-career to veteran journalists, students and media-related professionals. Domestically and globally, this is a critical moment within the journalism landscape, and to be a part of advancing NABJ’s core mission toward inclusivity, diversity and equity in traditional newsrooms and in new media.

Position Summary

NABJ seeks a Development Director (“DD”) to serve in this essential role that will strengthen our capacity to serve our membership, and our impact in the field of journalism. The DD will join our national office team, report to the Executive Director and be responsible for:

  • Examining and assessing our current systems, practices and processes
  • Recommending and implementing new systems and processes
  • Managing and organizing our diverse portfolio of existing partnerships, with immediate and particular focus on our 2018 Convention & Career Fair in Detroit, on August 1 to 5
  • Working with internal stakeholders, including the executive director, board of directors and staff on procedures and practices
  • Researching, identifying and cultivating new revenue streams

The ideal DD will be a seasoned development professional with a background in nonprofit operations, and will have more than ten years of experience that includes:

  • A proven track record in successfully securing major grants
  • Creating, directing, managing and implementing development systems and processes
  • A comprehension of journalism and media partnering and funding
  • A dynamic, fresh and results-driven approach to fundraising-development in today’s environment
  • Solid experience and proficiency in the nonprofit sector and in traditional philanthropy; and, the skill and proficiency to strengthen and grow NABJ’s capacity to do the important and urgent work we are involved in

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and implement a comprehensive development strategy that includes the Strategic Plan, and will ultimately expand NABJ’s capacity and impact. 
  • Assess current development systems, vulnerabilities and opportunities, and restructure and implement new systems of tracking and reporting to fortify our development infrastructure.
  • Design fundraising-development tool-kits and campaigns, and introduce new strategies for partnerships.
  • Manage the development budget, including oversight and record keeping activities.
  • Provide support to the executive director, board of directors, staff and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with communications, programs, membership, founders and board members to broaden and to ensure effective and efficient engagement -and opportunity- with current and prospective partners.
  • Implement system and procedure for lead follow through.
  • Create presentations for target partners [existing and prospective].
  • Manage a broad and diverse portfolio of existing funding partners for our annual signature Convention & Career Fair.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • A proven track record in assessing the development infrastructure of a nonprofit and implementing systems and processes that strengthen capacity.
  • A comprehension of large scale conventions in the context of development.
  • A successful track record in securing large sum-major grants: a minimum of 10 years of partnership development and/or major funder cultivation.
  • Strong background in strategic planning and project management experience.
  • A sensibility and commitment to the media field, and a comprehension of the journalism landscape.
  • Experience and proficiency in navigating the nonprofit sector, traditional philanthropy and corporate sponsorship.
  • Expertise of donor management systems and the most efficient and effective system specific to NABJ’s needs.
  • A commitment to NABJ’s mission and role.

Position Summary

NABJ seeks a Communications & Media Relations Manager (“CMRM”) to serve in the essential role of positioning and communicating NABJ’s mission, brand and purpose to various external and internal constituents and stakeholders. This is an ideal position for a mid-career candidate who is committed to NABJ’s mission, and helping to develop our communications and media strategy to strengthen and impact the field of journalism and media. The CMRM position requires a good balance of strategic thinking and tactical skills sets, and involves:

  • Contributing to the assessment of current internal and external communications and media practices, systems and processes, and the execution of new practices, systems and processes, including tracking and database development;
  • Assisting in the development of a communications strategy aligned with NABJ’s Strategic Plan; and,
  • Positioning our signature annual Convention & Career Fair; board of directors; founders; executive director; membership; and programs to be at the forefront of issues and dialogue, particularly related journalism and media.

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate will be experienced in communications strategy and execution, including a proven track record in digital and social media engagement; internal and external communications; nonprofit and/or public affairs experience; and, measurable knowledge and experience in communications and media that involves:

  • Development and execution of a strategic communications plan;
  • Media and press relations, including crisis and quick-response management;
  • Communications campaigns, and a track record in digital and traditional media;
  • Internal and external communications;
  • Issues-reputation and brand management; and,
  • Executive, high-level communications.

The CMRM will report to the executive director, and work closely with her, the development director, membership manager, programs manager, board of directors and staff.

Key Proficiencies and Attributes

  •  Exceptional writing, editing, researching and fact-checking skills;
  • Proficiency in writing-editing in various forms (e.g., executive communications, press materials, business, marketing collateral, remarks, talking points), and for multiple platforms and audiences.
  • Sound and mature professional judgment, and diplomacy in a multi-constituent environment;
  • Keen ear for news and issues related to journalism, media and NABJ membership, including a knack for scanning the environment for stories-issues of interest to position NABJ.
  • Proficiency in new technology, digital and social media, and current community engagement methods and practices;
  • A quick learner and adapter, and the ability to manage multiple moving parts; and,
  • A commitment to NABJ’s mission and purpose.

Required Qualifications

  •  Six-plus years of experience in communications and media
  • A Bachelor’s degree
