The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is the largest membership organization of journalists of color in the nation. Since its founding over 40 years ago, NABJ strengthens the field of journalism and media through our programming, partnerships, career and professional development, and advocacy efforts.
Our membership includes entry-level to mid-career to veteran journalists, students, educators and media-related professionals. Domestically and globally, this is a critical moment within the journalism and media landscape, and to be a part of advancing NABJ's core mission toward inclusion, diversity and equity in traditional newsrooms and in new media.
Position Summary
NABJ seeks a Programs Manager ("PM") to serve in the essential role of managing our vast programs area and convenings designed to strengthen the skills of our members, and advance our mission. This is an ideal opportunity for a mid-career candidate who is committed to NABJ's mission, and to developing our members and strengthening the field of journalism and media through targeted programming.
The PM will involve management of NABJ program areas that include:
  • Fellowships, scholarships and internships
  • Student programs and projects
  • A large scale annual convention & career fair, and mid-to-smaller convenings throughout the year
  • Awards and special honors
Key Responsibilities
  • Program management, including defining project objectives and managing quality control from start to follow-up;
  • Communicating and working with internal and external stakeholders and constituents;
  • Working closely with the executive director, development director, communications manager, and staff and the board of directors;
  • Assisting with the management of office interns and volunteer tasks;
  • Administration of grants; and,
  • Creating and maintaining a tracking system. 
Experience and knowledge 
  • Exceptional organization and project management skills;
  • Experience in event planning and management, and monitoring techniques;
  • Exceptional experience in handling multiple high-level tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to troubleshoot and offer workable solutions;
  • Program budget management and oversight;
  • Experience in creating tracking systems and work flow charts;
  • Knowledge of philanthropic and corporate sectors; and,
  • Exceptional writing, editing and researching skills.
Required Qualifications
  • Three to five-plus years of experience in programs and/or events management
  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Journalism and media experience preferred
