This panel of editors, columnists and award-winning bloggers – both openly LGBT journalists and straight allies – will share how to advocate in the newsroom for LGBT-inclusive stories. Learn how to package LGBT-inclusive work by emphasizing common values and human interest stories that all readers can relate to. Panelists will present their success stories, and reveal what worked and what didn’t.

Why We’re Not Getting the Best Jobs in Media 
Despite the country’s economic troubles, there is one sector of the industry generating a rapidly growing number of highly coveted jobs, many of them leadership positions. But too few are going to talented people of color. Whether you’re a mid-career journalist or a student trying to get a foot in the door, it’s time to put digital media on your career path. Panelists in this session will discuss key skills that are most in demand and how to acquire them. They’ll also demonstrate how to build name recognition and get on the radar of hiring managers. Participants will be connected with a network of peers and mentors to help them advance.

Pitch Me With Your Best Shot: Turn Your Idea into a National News Story 
This session offers a unique opportunity for freelancers, PR professionals, editors and reporters to come together to pitch or be pitched potential story ideas. Similar to TV’s American Idol, PR professionals and freelancers will have 45 seconds each to pitch their story, product or client to a panel of producers from select media outlets. After each pitch, panelists will offer feedback and ways to improve, and note if they are interested in pursuing the story. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of what it takes to pitch successfully. The winner of the best pitch will receive a prize.
