Benét J. Wilson is founder and sole proprietor of Aviation Queen LLC, an aviation/travel freelance writing, multimedia and consulting business.
B.A. in broadcast journalism, 1985, The American University, Washington, D.C. Graduate courses in publication management and design, 1987-89, The George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
Wilson has worked for various aviation trade publications, including AirwaysNews.com, AOPA Online, AOPA Pilot magazine, The Weekly of Business Aviation, Business/Commercial Aviation magazine, the subscriber-only Aviation Week Intelligence Network, Aviation Daily, Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine, the Towers and Tarmacs blog and Commuter/Regional Airline News. She has been a trade journalist for 30 years, covering employment and training, welfare reform, economic development and agriculture/agribusiness. She also spent five years in senior corporate communications positions at Delta Air Lines, Mesa Air Group and Rolls-Royce North America.
Wilson serves on the Online News Association board. She is the past chair of NABJ’s Digital Journalism Task Force and serves as VP of education. She was convention Program Chair in 2012 and 2013 and is active in the Baltimore Association of Black Journalists. She is a founder of the Journalism Diversity Project, a curated list that connects diverse digital journalists, potential employers and organizations needing speakers. She has created workshops for journalism conferences on career options, branding, and digital media. She created and oversees the @NABJDigital Twitter account, and is an administrator for @NABJ and NABJ’s Official Facebook Page.
I earned my degree in broadcast journalism from American University in 1985, but became a print journalist. With these massive changes in the industry, I transformed into a multimedia journalist. As media companies move toward a new content paradigm, NABJ must ensure that members have the relevant training needed to remain competitive in their newsrooms.
My priorities as VP-digital are:
• Offer year-round digital training for members.
• Advocate to get member jobs in new media companies;
• Persuade new media companies to financially support NABJ; and
• Coordinate NABJ’s myriad social media platforms for more effective messaging.
