NABJ Names 2006 Student Scholarship Recipients

INDIANAPOLIS—August 20, 2006--The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) announced that twelve student members will receive financial assistance to attend a college or university to further pursue a career in journalism.
“There are an impressive number of young journalists in this year’s class of student scholars,” said NABJ President Bryan Monroe, vice president and editorial director for Ebony and JET magazines. “One of our core missions is to assist students in attaining their career goals. These young, talented men and women are the future of journalism.”

The following students are recipients of this year’s NABJ Student Scholarships:

Aubrey Hoyle - University City High School - San Diego, CA
Regina Graham - Center High School - Antelope, CA
Kevin Green - Gonzaga College High School - Washington, DC
Willine Valentin - Lane Tech High School - Chicago, IL

Carole Simpson Scholarship
DeShawn Brown - The University of North Carolina - Johns Island, SC

Gerald Boyd/Robin Stone Scholarship
Ashley Johnson - University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign - Downers Grove, IL

The 2006 NABJ Scholars were chosen by the NABJ’s Student Education Enrichment and Development (SEED) Committee, which each year helps support student members with internships, scholarships, and the chance to cover the annual convention for student media projects.

Over 50 students from across the country covered the 31st Annual Convention, August 16-20 at the Indianapolis Convention Center. The convention  also featured the nation’s largest journalism career fair along with specialized workshops, plenary sessions, professional development breakfasts targeted to various journalism disciplines, a Hall of Fame banquet, gospel brunch and media receptions for veteran and future journalists.
