WASHINGTON – CNN and the National Association of Black Journalists are offering African American students the opportunity to chronicle their experiences at historically black colleges and universities through the network’s Black in America series.

CNN will embark on a multi-city tour of six historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in conjunction with CNN’s Black in America series.  Florida A&M University (FAMU) will host the first Black in America campus stop on Tuesday, April 8, on the front lawn of FAMU’s School of Journalism and Graphic Communication from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET).

“We are very excited to partner with CNN on this initiative,” said NABJ President Barbara Ciara, anchor at WTKR NewsChannel 3 in Norfolk, Va. “This tour is not only an excellent educational opportunity for future black journalists, but it’s also a way to present the voices of young African Americans whose perspectives are seldom seen in today’s media landscape.”

Along with FAMU, the tour will also stop at Howard University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and the Atlanta University Center.

NABJ and CNN will choose one Campus iReporter from each school, whose prize will be a digital video camera.

"Given that the voices of younger generations are sometimes taken for granted, it’s admirable that CNN has partnered with NABJ and some of the nation's finest HBCU's to offer students such an amazing opportunity to have their voices heard," said Christopher Nelson, NABJ Student Representative. "Having student voices as part of CNN's Black in America project offers an important perspective about the black experience from those of us who inherit such an important legacy."

The winner from each HBCU also may be able to submit additional footage from their Black in America campus stop to win the grand prize: a trip for two to the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans over the Fourth of July weekend. NABJ will showcase the students’ work on its Web site, www.nabj.org.

NABJ encourages students to share their firsthand accounts of the black experience through video, photo, audio or text submissions at www.iReport.com, CNN’s community Web site.  Contributors to iReport.com also may gain recognition by having the material they submit to the site – once vetted and approved for use – appear on CNN or CNN.com.

Black in America is an in-depth television series focusing on the often under-reported stories of the African-American experience.  This landmark program features six hours of documentaries, a weekly reports on CNN/U.S. and CNN International and a multimedia Web site.

CNN.com’s special section for the HBCU tour is available at www.CNN.com/blackinamerica/hbcu.  For more information on the Black in America series, visit www.CNN.com/blackinamerica.

An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, with nearly 4,000 members, and provides educational, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.
