WASHINGTON, D.C. October 23, 2007 NABJ President Barbara Ciara will lead a delegation of journalists to Senegal, December 1-9 to cover several key issues, including combating malaria and HIV/AIDS, the impact of climate change, improving education, and efforts to close the digital divide.

For more than two decades, the National Association of Black Journalists and the United Nations have partnered to provide US-based journalists with insight on key international development issues, especially those relating to Africa, and access to development initiatives and key decision-makers.

"This is a rare and valuable opportunity for NABJ members to gain experience in international reporting, while providing a window into this part of the world to U.S. audiences, said NABJ President Barbara Ciara.

The NABJ Media Institute International Fellowship to Senegal is madepossible through support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, The International Reporting Project as well as in-country logistical assistance from the United Nations.

The United Nations is very pleased to partner once again with NABJ in arranging for journalists to cover key development issues, said Djibril Diallo, Director of the UN New York Office of Sport for Development and Peace and chair of the NABJ World Affairs Task Force. Participants will have the opportunity to see initiatives in local communities and also meet with government leaders.

Up to 10 NABJ members will be selected for an opportunity to participate and report from Senegal. Selected fellows will gather in New York on Nov. 30 for daylong briefings prior to departing for Senegal.
