Washington, D.C., July 10, 2007 As the journalism industry moves further into the digital revolution, video and audio have become some of the most fertile fields for multimedia storytelling. This year's NABJ Visual Taskforce programs are intended to establish a foundation for photographers, designers and editors in this new arena, as well as debate the future of newspapers and discuss the world of fellowships and scholarships available for professional development.

In addition to workshops and panels, the VTF Suite, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, will be open every day from 5 p.m. for portfolio edits and visiting.

NABJ's Visual Task Force programs begin Wednesday, Aug. 8, with A Learning Lab on Multimedia, a workshop produced in conjunction with the Knight New Media Center at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. The all-day lab is for journalists from any medium who want to build a foundation in multimedia they can take back to their newsrooms to help management, their editors and colleagues understand how to produce richer stories. Leaders in print, television and multimedia will discuss storyboarding, digital video and photography, capturing and editing sound, the basics of creating a Flash slide show and how to combine all these elements into a multimedia story.

On Wednesday, participants in the half-day Adobe Flash Workshop will explore how to create interactive Web sites, digital experiences and mobile content with Flash Web-development software. Learn from professionals how to design and author interactive content that includes video, graphics and animation. The Visual Consciousness: Finding the Untold Stories workshop will explore techniques for enhanced visual story telling and launch the annual Moneta J. Sleet Photography Competition, in which NABJ photographers and designers compete to capture the essence of Las Vegas, the convention's host city.

On Thursday, the Quark Workshop, led by company professionals and Katina Revels, photo editor at the Detroit Free Press, will show participants some of the new features and innovations in Quark, including Quark Print Collection and Quark Interactive Designer. Thursday evening will end with the Visual Task Force Auction Preview Reception, an opportunity for conference attendees to see work framed prints donated by NABJ photographers. Proceeds from the Visual Task Force Auction, held Saturday, Aug. 11, from 12:30-2:30 p.m., will benefit scholarships for future students.

On Friday, workshops will deal with the latest in video editing and audio production. The Final Cut Pro Workshop offers a chance to learn how to edit video from almost any format and begin working with multi-cam editing and advanced color correction. Sound Workshop for the Photojournalist in the Multimedia Age is a hands-on program designed for photojournalists who want to include sound with their daily and enterprise work. The workshop will include a discussion on equipment as well as how to use it. Attendees may bring their own equipment to the program.

Also Friday, a panel of photographers and editors from major metropolitan daily newspapers, as well as The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, will discuss the challenges and opportunities of the digital revolution. Transitioning in Newspapers is for print and visual journalists interested in adapting their traditional newspaper philosophies with the demands of the Web. While some journalists feel pressure to produce good enough work for online, others are being asked to multitask in ways that can affect their overall performance. Come find out how you can prepare for these changes.

Friday afternoon also features Exploring Your Options, an opportunity to learn more about different careers paths within journalism. Learn about fellowships, pursuing advanced degrees in journalism or visual communication, as well as scholarships.

Friday ends with The Visual Task Force Awards Reception, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, Quark Inc., Canon U.S.A. Inc. The event will be emceed by Mistress of Ceremonies Akili Ramsess.
