NABJ Announces Line Up for Las Vegas Authors Showcase
Washington, D.C., June 25, 2007 - This years Authors Showcase at the NABJ Annual Convention in Las Vegas will kick off on Thursday, August 9, with a hands-on breakfast workshop at 7:30 a.m., with Regina Brooks, an agent, Patrice Gaines, an author and writing coach and Wayne Dawkins, a self-publishing and small press guru. They will address topics such as turning your ideas into a solid and salable book proposal, finding the right agent, creating a winning sample chapter, and discussing self-publishing vs. going through traditional publishers.
As journalists seek to expand their brand and broaden their careers, more are taking the leap into writing books. In the Turning Your Beat into A Book Panel, learn how several successful journalists used their areas of expertise to get a book deal, and how you can too. Panelists include NABJ members, Michelle Singletary, Washington Post columnist and bestselling author of Your Money and Your Man , Amy Dubois Barnett, author of Get Yours, Sharon Epperson, CNBC business reporter and author of The Big Payoff, Aundrea Lacey, author of Brownie Points, and Tara Roberts, Cosmo Girl editor and author of What Your Mama Never Told You. The panel will be moderated by Andrea King Collier, freelance journalist and author of The Black Womans Guide to Black Mens Health.
On Friday, August 10, the News and Controversy Panel will highlight the hot topics of the day. Marcus Mabry of Newsweek will be discussing his new biography Condoleezza Rice and Her Path to Power, along with Cora Daniels, author of Ghetto Nation, Kevin Merida of the Washington Post author of On Being a Black Man, and Michael Fletcher also of the Washington Post on their collaboration on Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas, and Las Vegas-based Chef Jeff Henderson, author of the bestselling book Cooked.
Also on Friday, join us for The Real Deal on Book Publishing Panel with Regina Brooks, agent, Malaika Adero, editor at Atria, Walter Mosley, author, Linda Duggins, publicist, and Tina Ansa McElroy, author and publisher of Down South Press, moderated by Susan McHenry of Black Issues in Books Review. Get the inside scoop on what publishers are looking for, getting a book deal and the hard work of marketing the book once its written from those in the know.
On Saturday, August 11, the Book Collaborations Panel will explore how journalists are adding to their bottom line through writing collaborations with celebrities and other notables. Hear from Hilary Beard, co-author on several books including Friends: A Love Story with Courtney Vance and Angela Basset, and Venus and Serena Williams, David Steele, co-author on Silent Gesture: The Autobiography of Tommie Smith, Jae Bryson, the co-author of Playing for Paterno, and Karen Hunter, co-author of Wendys Got Heat with Wendy Williams.
The Authors Showcase Celebrity Reception on Thursday, August 9, from 6:30-8:00 p.m., will feature bestselling author of both non-fiction and fiction Walter Mosley. Mosley will be talking about his latest book, This Year You Write Your Novel, and his upcoming novels. Actress Victoria Rowell will be there discussing her memoir, the Women Who Raised Me, and retired basketball legend Kareem Abdul- Jabbar will chat about his book, On the Shoulders of Giants: My Journey Through the Harlem Renaissance. Our member authors will also be there to sign their books.
An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, with more than 4,100 members, and provides educational, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.
