INDIANAPOLIS -- The National Association of Black Journalists announced the honorees for the 2006 Salute to Excellence Awards.  The annual awards recognize exemplary coverage of people or issues of African Americans or in the African Diaspora. The competition honors work from print, television, radio, online, and photojournalism.

For the first time since 2003, the honorees were announced at the Salute to Excellence Awards Gala at the 31st Annual Convention and Career Fair in Indianapolis. Rene Syler, anchor of the CBS Early Show was the host.

“This was an amazing year for our journalism,” said NABJ President Bryan Monroe, vp/editorial director for Ebony and Jet magazines. “From Hurricane Katrina to the death of Rosa Parks to the war in Iraq, journalists showed how important different perspectives are in telling the stories of America and the world.”

The Journalist of the Year Award honored Atlanta Journal Constitution editorial columnist Cynthia Tucker.
