NABJ Elects New President at Annual Convention in Dallas
DALLAS — Herbert Lowe, 40, was elected president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) at the 28th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Dallas. The 3,000-member organization of African American journalists is the largest in the world. Lowe will serve as the national chair for two years.
A staff writer at Newsday in Queens, N.Y., Lowe has worked as a reporter and editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Virginian-Pilot, The Record (N.J.), The Press of Atlantic City, The Milwaukee Community Journal and Amateur Sports magazine. Lowe said, NABJ will regain its leadership role among journalism groups as we fight for more black journalists in all media, at all levels and in all markets. Our advocacy on issues concerning diversity will be inspired and aggressive.
Born in Camden, N.J., Lowe is the eldest of six children raised by a single mother. He graduated in 1984 with a double major (broadcast journalism and political science) from Marquette University. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Lowe is the 15th president of the organization.

An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, with more than 4,100 members, and provides educational, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.
