WASHINGTON, DC (May 27, 2014)
--The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is proud to announce the selection of Dr. Linda Florence Callahan, professor in the department of journalism and mass communication at North Carolina A&T State University as the association's 2014 Journalism Educator of the Year. The award recognizes the service, commitment and academic guidance of an outstanding journalism teacher, professor or educator who has helped increase the number of black journalists in newsrooms.

"Professor Callahan has been preparing the next generation of journalists for three decades," said NABJ President Bob Butler. "Her dedication is evident with the number of her former students who now portray "Aggie Pride" every day in television, radio, print and online newsrooms."

Callahan was the first educator to serve on NABJ's Board of Directors in 1997, a position, she said, enabled her to “represent journalism educators, public relations practitioners, authors, and others who never had representation on the board before.”

“I am honored and humbled to be named NABJ's 2014 Journalism Educator of the Year,” said Callahan. “I never really expected to receive this honor. I didn't know about the nomination until I received a call from NABJ President Bob Butler informing that I’m this year’s recipient. I was shocked and could not believe the unexpected great news.”

Callahan thanked Triad Association of Black Journalists’ chapter president Kerry Charles and secretary Dioni Wise for the nomination. “This is a huge award from this well respected national organization,” she added.

Callahan has been teaching journalism at North Carolina A&T since 2000. She is the 2013 recipient of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Robert. P. Knight Multicultural Recruitment Award. The award is presented to an individual or media organization that has made significant contributions to promoting diversity in scholastic media programs. In addition to her longtime affiliation with NABJ, she is also an active member and a former board of director at the AEJMC.

Annually, Callahan coordinates her annual regional workshop, High School Media Day, at North Carolina A&T State University for students in the Greensboro, N.C. area. She founded the program in 1997, in partnership with the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA), averaging between  250-300 participants each year.

She is the founding president of the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists (formerly known as Charlotte Association of Black Journalists), the Columbus (OH) Association of Black Journalists and the founding advisor of the African American Media Association at The Ohio State University.

"Professor Callahan is a valuable asset in journalism education," said NABJ Student Representative Khorri Atkinson. "She has an unwavering commitment to ensure that the next generation of journalists are well equipped with the tools and mindset they need to thrive.”

Callahan holds a Ph.D and Masters in Communication from The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, and a B.A. in journalism, radio and television from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She taught at The Ohio State University, Alabama A&M University and Elizabeth City State University.

Callahan will be honored along with other honorees during NABJ's 39th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Boston.

An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, and provides educational, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.
