Campaign Violations

|
NABJ takes the elections of its national Board of Directors very seriously and every effort is made to ensure a fair and ethical process. All of the candidates have been made aware of the elections rules and understand that they are responsible for the actions of their campaign representatives. Whenever a candidate or campaign fails to abide the rules, the Elections Committee is empowered to issue sanctions including but not limited to decertification. After receiving written notice of the violations and proposed sanctions, each candidate has five days to appeal the Committee's ruling to the current NABJ Board of Directors. Public notice of the violations and sanctions will be withheld until the appeals process is exhausted.
To date, the Committee has imposed the following sanctions against the following candidates:
June 1, 2009
Bob Butler, candidate for vice president-broacast, for using the NABJ membership list, a violation of the rules which prohibit such use. Butler received a public reprimand and is prohibited from using the electronic campaign message service provided by the National Office.
June 1, 2009
Tracie Hunter, a candidate for vice president-broadcast, and Kenneth Knight, a candidate for Region III director, were both cited for failure to file the May 4 spending disclosure form. Both received public reprimands and their spending caps were reduced by $1,000 -- to $6,000 for Hunter and $ 3,500 for Knight.
