NABJ established the NABJ Gulf Coast Fellowship to provide professional development opportunities for its members to tell the stories of black people affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Gulf region specifically Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas -- sustained catastrophic damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The destruction led to the dislocation of many people, including many black residents.
