NABJ/NYT Leadership Academy

November 2007- August 2008

Beginning newspaper managers will be guided through the issues and land mines of newsroom leadership, and gain skills necessary to lead in a fast-changing media world.

Journalists selected to attend the Academy will have all their expenses paid, including transportation. They will be flown to New York in November to participate in a two-day management seminar with editors of The New York Times Company. A range of topics will be explored, such as newsroom power and politics, being black and a leader in the newsroom, setting goals and executing a vision, the business realities of the news business, new media and the Web, dealing with conflict and managing performance.

In January and again in March, participants will travel to Harvard University to attend the Maynard Institute's Media Academy, an innovative management training program held in two nine-day sessions. And as part of the Unity convention next summer, they will lead a seminar about what they learned in the Academy, including best practices.

Applicants must have two to five years of experience in one or more management positions. (See the full list of requirements below.)

Application deadline was September 30, 2007.

This Academy is limited to four managers.
