Five student achievers will receive honors and three industry titans will share their stories at the 2012 South Florida Black Journalists Association Scholarship Reception on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m. at Florida International University's Biscayne Bay Campus.

The public is invited to share the afternoon celebrating scholastic achievement, excellence in journalism and community leadership at the event to be held in the Wolfe University Ballroom at FIU's North Miami location, 3000 NE 151 St.

SFBJA will award the Rochelle Bridges Memorial Scholarship to Adrianne Richardson, a 2012 graduate of William H. Turner Technical Arts High School in Miami-Dade County. She currently is enrolled at FIU. Rochelle Bridges was a two-time, Emmy Award-winning anchor at WSVN-Channel 7 who passed away in 1997. She served as president of SFBJA from 1993 to 1995.

Dwight Lauderdale Scholarship recipients include Monica Herndon from the University of Miami, Viera Galloway, and Melonne Mack, both from Florida Memorial University. The award is in honor of Dwight Lauderdale, who retired in 2008 after more than three decades as a reporter and most prominently an anchor at WPLG-Channel 10. The scholarship is open to students attending college in South Florida who are pursuing degrees in journalism.

Also being honored will be Katrina Lowe, who earlier this year received SFBJA’s endowed scholarship reserved for students at FIU.

"The scholarship reception is one of our most important events because it spotlights our aspiring journalists,” said SFBJA President Terence Shepherd. "And, SFBJA works hard to support students who seek a career in our industry. We are also pleased to have three outstanding media professionals sharing their stories at our event.”

The keynote speaker will be Robert G. Beatty, the publisher of  the South Florida Times and former general counsel of The Miami Herald. Gregory H. Lee Jr., 19th President of the National Association of Black Journalists and recently appointed Executive Sports Editor at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and Dr. Raul Reis, Dean of FIU's School of Journalism and Mass Communications, also will be guest speakers.

The reception includes appetizers, beverages and a silent auction. Networking begins at 3 p.m.; the program starts at 4 p.m.

The cost is $25 for SFBJA members; $35 for nonmembers; and $15 for full-time students. Parking is free.
