NABJ Convention Site Selection
How the Process Works
Among the most important duties your NABJ Board of Directors performs is selecting which cities will host our annual convention. Each term, the Board is expected to ensure that cities are chosen at least five years in advance - and in the best interest of the association.
Here are some recent and future locations for the NABJ Convention and Career Fair:
2004 Washington (Unity 04)
2005 Atlanta (30th Anniversary) Aug. 3-7
2006 Indianapolis - Aug. 16-20
2007 Las Vegas - Aug. 8-12
2008 - Chicago (UNITY year) - July 23-27
2009 - Tampa
2010 - San Diego
2011 - OPEN (under consideration)
2012 - OPEN (UNITY year)
2013 - OPEN (under consideration)
Unity: Journalists of Color will hold its next joint convention in 2008 in Chicago, and again in 2012, in a city to be determined.
The NABJ Board is now engaging in a process to choose cities for our conventions in 2011 and 2013 (2012 is scheduled to be a Unity year). As always, our Executive Director, our professional consultants and the NABJ Council of Presidents are ably assisting the Board. Heres a look at that process so far:
Oct. 2005: At its fall meeting in Washington, the board discussed the criteria, process, background and next steps involved in convention site selection. An initial list of 27 cities compiled from nominations by Board members, chapter presidents and the national staff was submitted to the Board for preliminary screening.
Jan. 20, 2006: At its winter meeting in Los Angeles, the Board evaluated initial Requests For Information from the 27 cities and then narrowed the list to:
New York City
Minneapolis
Orlando
Philadelphia
San Antonio
Toronto
(*New Orleans received the next number of votes and would be an alternate if any city is dropped from the list.)
The Board then directed the staff to conduct further research, initial site visits and preliminary negotiations with representatives from these cities as well as their respective convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) and hotels and leaders of local chapters.
April or Aug. 2006: At either the spring or summer meeting, whenever the information is ready, the staff will report back to the Board with its findings.
April or Aug. 2006: Again, when ready, the board will then whittle that list of nine cities down to a few finalists.
Aug. or Oct. 2006: At the subsequent meeting, the Board will accept formal proposals and presentations, if necessary, from the cities, CVBs, local chapters, hotels, etc.
Oct. 2006: The Board will discuss its options, seek additional information, if necessary, and then formally vote to select two cities and an alternate.
