MA'AT AWARDS
Ma’at is a word from Ancient Kemet that means Truth.

The National Association of Black Journalists is calling for entries for its 2013 Ma’at Awards, to be presented
at the NABJ Region V Conference & Career Fair in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Ma’at Awards recognizes excellence
in journalism in the coverage of African-Americans and the Black experience. The Ma’at Awards competition
benefits the NABJ Region V Student and Professional Development Programs.

DEADLINE: Entries must be received at NABJ Region V by March 25, 2013. Late Deadline is March 29, 2013.
No exceptions. Materials must be published or broadcast from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
In addition to relevance to the African American community, entries will be judged based on
thoroughness, technical competency, enterprise, difficulty, impact and originality. Entrants are
encouraged to include statements detailing background, objective, impact or results of entries.
ELIGIBILITY: The awards are open to entrants in the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana,
Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
ENTRIES PER CATEGORY: An individual may have no more than one entry submitted in any single
category. Materials may be submitted by the individual or the media outlet.
DECISION OF JUDGES: If in the judge’s opinion, there are an insufficient number of entries in any category,
no awards will be given in that category. Decisions of the judges are final.
All entries should be submitted as a pdf, url link, CD or DVD. Headline entries must include 3 headlines per
entry. Please label with the entrant’s name, category and media outlet.
ENTRY FEES/GUIDELINES: The entry fee is $15 per entry for NABJ members, $10 per entry for students and
$20 per entry for non-members. Late fees are an additional $5 per category. All checks/money orders should
be made payable to: NABJ 2013 Region V Conference.
FINALISTS AND WINNERS: Three finalists will be announced in each category. Finalists will receive a
certificate and winners will receive an award during the Ma’at Awards Banquet at the NABJ Region V
Conference & Career Fair, April 20, 2013 in Little Rock.
