10:00 AM - 10:45 AM
Morning Session I - "Backup and Reboot: Having A Plan B"

With so many companies downsizing and the bad economy
job security is a huge issue no matter what field you work in.
Having a back-up plan is key. Many journalists have put their
entrepreneurial skills to work while still maintaining a 9 to 5.
In addition, times have changed especially as it relates to
technology, veteran journalists are learning new skills to
remain competitive and well rounded in the work place.
Through it all we remain flexible and create our own
pathways to success.

11:00 AM - 11:45 AM
Morning Session II - IPads, and Smart phones, and Tablets,
Oh My!: The New News Technology - Is new technology
making things easier or taking away jobs?  Journalists across
the board find their arsenal of tools needed to do their jobs go
far beyond a computer. Many are crossing multiple platforms
as "One Man Bands" News managers talk to the economic
reasons for the new "toys" and journalists tell how the
technology effects how they do their jobs.

12 Noon - 1:15 PM
Region III Achievers Luncheon and Scholarship Awards
Moderator: Condace Pressley, NABJ Past President
Speaker: Byron Pitts, CBS News/60 Minutes
Sponsored by Johnson C. Smith University and Wells Fargo

Afternoon Sessions I  - A & B

A) Making the Connection: One on One with the
Boss"
- Students and professionals sit down with
hiring managers in "speed dating" style sessions
to have their resumes, portfolios, and reels reviewed.
Participants will receive information on ways to get that
first or that next job. Moderator: Ken Smith - Anchor/Reporter,
WRAL-TV

B) "Movin' On Up: A Virtual Track to Management" - How do I
get from "assistant” to editor? Publisher? News Director?
General Manager? What skills do I need? How long do I stay
in a position? Our panelists discuss their career paths and
offer specific strategies for climbing the corporate ladder.
Moderator: Bob Butler- KCBS Radio Sponsored by Raycom
Media

 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM
Afternoon Session II - "Like or Unlike: Responding to Posts,
Policies and Politics”
- Engaging with and responding to
viewers while keeping your journalistic integrity is not always
an easy line to walk. Journalists have found themselves on
the receiving end of unprovoked criticism and in some cases
outright bullying from social media posts. Recently a TV
Anchor in Louisiana was fired because of the way she
responded to a critical viewer. How do journalists address
these posts while staying within their company’s policies and
staying politically correct?

 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM
Afternoon Session III - "Online Branding: Putting a Stamp on
Your Identity”
- The best products are those that are easily
understood, that simply communicate purpose. This
session will help you define your benefit to your audience,
how to convey it across multiple platforms, then how to use
that purpose to build a recognizable brand. Moderator:
Dr. Sybrill Bennett

9:00 PM - 11:00 PM
