NABJ SEED Donation Booklet
NABJ awards scholarships annually
to deserving high school and college students interested in pursuing journalism
careers. Over the last decade, NABJ has
awarded more than a half a million dollars to students studying broadcast, print,
and online journalism; photography; graphic design; and communications.
NABJ’s scholarships are up to
$2,500 each and are named in honor of NABJ Founders DeWayne Wickham, Les Payne,
and Maureen Bunyan; and Past President Merv Aubespin. Scholarships are also named in honor of
pioneer Carole Simpson, late journalists Larry Whiteside and Allison Fisher,
and NABJ’s Visual Task Force.

via NABJ’s website every fall and scholarships are awarded in the spring. NABJ Scholarships »
NABJ offers summer internships
annually to college students interested in pursuing a career in
journalism. Students gain hands-on
training in reporting, editing, photography, graphic design, video production,
and public relations at various U.S. news organizations. Past internships sites
include NBCUniversal, CBS, NPR, The Associated Press, and Bloomberg News.
Students can apply for internships
online via NABJ’s website during the fall semester. Winners are selected and notified of their
internship placement sites in the spring.

NABJ Student Multimedia Project
NABJ offers students an
expenses-paid fellowship to work in a fully operational newsroom to cover
NABJ’s annual convention and local stories in the host city.
During the week-long program,
students work alongside professional journalists and public relations experts
to produce daily television newscasts and newspapers; create and maintain the
convention website; and coordinate and manage corporate communications for
workshops, special events and NABJ’s sponsors.
Five students are selected for each
of the following program area: print, TV reporting, TV production, graphic
design, photography, multimedia, copy desk, and public relations. Mentors are selected based on their
experience and availability. Students
and mentors can apply online via NABJ’s website. Winners are selected and notified annually in
the spring.

NABJ JSHOP (High School Journalism Workshop)
NABJ’s JSHOP is a four-day workshop
for local high school students in the host city of NABJ’s annual convention.
The program provides interactive
learning opportunities through lectures, presentations, hands-on training and
field trips. The students learn
journalism fundamentals for newsgathering, writing, photography, video
production, radio, graphic design, editing, and social media. Professional
journalists, educators, and journalism college students provide mentorship and
supervision.
Successful applicants possess an
interest in pursuing a career in journalism.

the spring.

Student Multimedia Short Courses
The short courses are taught by teams of professional journalists who provide students with information about careers in the industry, training in writing, reporting and editing, and tips on job interviews and landing the first job or internship.
Student Career Mentoring Program
A new mentor program will be coming soon. In the meantime, student members are encouraged to access the NABJ member database to reach out to professional members. You can search for members by area, company, and job title. We encourage students to send introductory emails to members stating your name, school, and what specific questions you have about career paths or the journalism industry.
